Hi Richard -

I came across your site after googling "Mick Platts" - my dad's name, too. I didn't expect to find any reference to him, as his glory days were well before the advent of the internet. It was nice, though, to find another son's tribute to his father. My Dad wasn't a runner or an athlete, but he did have a way with paper mache - I've still got the photos from the 1997 Silver Jubilee fancy dress to prove it!

My Dad - my Mick - died on New Year's Eve 2007. After reading your posts, I don't think that I was ever lucky enough to enjoy the kind of relationship with him that you had with your dad, but I'm glad that at that end, we did become friends. Good friends, I'm glad to say.

I now live in Dubai, and have done for the last twelve years - I'm originally from Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, where my Dad was born and raised. Not too far from Barnsley, so you never know, eh?

Anyway, I hope you get to see this, and I hope that you're happier now than you have been. I know how hard it is, but I also know that it does get better.

Best regards from a fellow Platts (and the son of another Mick),

Mike Platts.

It was lovely to see so many attend the memorial service on Wednesday, especially your dad's friends from Ardsley, Broadway and Uni. This picture was passed around by Howard and made everyone smile. He looks about 14 but must have been 20. What an advertisement for Baileys!!

Thankyou Richard, I will be reading some of your words along with my own rememberances at the Memorial service in November. Mick was a great man,a loving son and a much loved brother to me and my sister and it is still hard to believe he is gone, but he will never be far from our thoughts. All my love to everyone

Dear Richard
I'm so sorry I have not contacted your family yet -not known how or what to write. I was in the same class as Mick from age 6 to 18. We went to Sunday School and Youth Club together. Our younger sisters were good friends. My first clear memory of him is when the teacher asked us all to gather round and look at 'Michael's grass'! His was shaded with different colours -yellows and browns whilst the rest of us were still doing strips of bue sky and green grass. He was a wonderful artist. We kept in contact through uni especially when he was on placement in Koln and I in Luxembourg. He was quiet as a boy and you and your Mum were the best thing that ever happened for him. We all thrilled at his success with a beautiful family and life in the States, which you've poignantly depicted - thank you. I wish I'd known he was ill. I wish I'd comunicated more. I miss him.........Love to you all. Sue x

Richard,

What a man he was. I met Mick in the September of 1970 when we both," shivered" into Broadway Grammar School together and collided in class 1 Webb! Seven years later our paths parted again. I re-bumped into Mick, Lord knows how many years ago when,on a return to Barnsley he just strolled into pub in which we were drinking and, we chatted like we were stil at school. I recall it as a delightful evening spent with a man who was truly engaging company.

It is an outrage that he is gone. It has been my privilege to have ever met him at all

Dear Anne and Family:
Coming back from our holiday I received the sadness information regarding the death of your husband and father Mick.
Mick and me we know us for more than 15 years and I lost a very good colleague, a friend.
I wish you sufficient power during this very hard time. My thoughts are with you.
